Carolyn Hart, is a renowned and accomplished teacher. Her students are singing at major operatic and concert stages around the world such as the Metropolitan Opera; Lyric Opera of Chicago; Santa Fe;  English National Opera; Bavarian State Opera; Salzburg Festival; Lincoln Center; Wigmore Hall; Canadian Opera Company to name a few. They have been finalists and winners of major national and international competitions and awards - the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Richard Tucker, Marian Anderson, Bel Canto, Opera Index, George London Award, Stella Maris International Award, National Association of Teachers of Singing both Regional and National auditions.

Most recently Dr. Hart had the honour to collaborate with noted Dutch soprano Elly Ameling on a book and film “Some Thoughts on the Heart of Art Song”. 

Carolyn is a frequent performer of recital, oratorio and orchestral repertoire. She has performed regularly in the Chicago area and has toured extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, and Great Britain. Further concerts have taken her to Hong Kong, Korea, New York, and Paris. She’s especially enjoyed the collaboration of chamber music and performs with a variety of instrumental ensembles including the “Chicago New Arts Trio” (soprano, flute and piano). Her CD Not Your Usual Lineup features newly commissioned Canadian works for soprano, clarinet and piano. The Bliss of Solitude is a collaboration with pianist Daniel Paul Horn of Canadian Art Song. She has been frequently broadcast on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) radio and television, as well as WFMT (Chicago). 

Dr. Hart holds degrees from the University of Toronto (Irene Jessner) and completed her Doctorate at the University of British Columbia (Phyllis Mailing), where her dissertation examined the vocal works of Barbara Pentland. Further studies have taken her to the Opera program at the Banff School of Fine Arts (Boris Goldovsky); Britten-Pears School (Peter Pears) in Aldeburgh, England; and the Académie de Musique (Hughes Cuenod) in Lausanne, Switzerland. She also received her ARCT in piano performance.  

Dr. Hart has adjudicated extensively across Canada and has also served as juror for the Canada Council and the Eckhardt-Grammatté Competition. 

Before moving back to Sault Ste. Marie where her musical education began, Dr. Hart was Professor and Chair of Voice at Wheaton College,where she was honored with the “Senior Teaching Achievement Award” and recently named Professor Emeritus. She was also on faculty at the School of Music, Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland where she was honoured with the “President’s Award for Outstanding Research.”
