Bossa Bacana

Thursday May 28, 2026

7:30 pm - THE LOFT

Doors at 6:45 pm - cash bar

at Algoma Conservatory - 75 Huron Street

Tickets: Adults: $40 (all fees included)

30 Years and Under: $28

Holly Holmes - vocals, Matt Warnock - guitar, Frank Deresti - bass, Josh Norling - sax, Mark Gough - drums

From the sunlit beaches of Rio de Janeiro to smoky New York jazz rooms, from the rhythmic heartbeat of Northeastern Brazil to the atmospheric world of Björk’s Icelandic landscapes, Bossa Bacana travels freely across musical borders in search of groove, colour, and connection. No style is too distant and no tradition too sacred for reinterpretation — everything they discover is reshaped through the ensemble’s warm, distinctly Northern-Ontario voice.

Formed in Sault Ste. Marie, Bossa Bacana brings together five musicians whose paths have crossed across concerts, recording studios, university halls, and community stages. Each member brings a lifetime of experience, yet the group feels fresh, intuitive, and joyfully spontaneous. They blend samba, bossa nova, jazz standards, reimagined pop, and original compositions into a sound that feels both deeply rooted and boldly exploratory.

Frank Deresti (bass) anchors the group with his unmistakable blend of lyricism, groove, and storytelling.

Josh Norling (sax) adds a warm, expressive voice shaped by jazz, soul, and global influences.

Mark Gough (drums) threads together Brazilian rhythms with decades of creative work as a performer, producer, and musical collaborator.

Matt Warnock (guitar) draws on years spent studying Brazilian music firsthand in Brazil as well as a long career in jazz performance and improvisation.

Holly Holmes (vocals) brings a luminous, flexible voice that moves effortlessly from intimate bossa phrasing to modern pop textures.

Together, they create music that dances, breathes, and invites listeners into an ever-shifting world of rhythm and melody.

Their upcoming concert features a colourful journey through Brazilian classics, inventive arrangements of timeless jazz standards, and new original works. For Bossa Bacana, borders are simply invitations — places to explore, transform, and return from with new stories to share.
