If there were a frequent-flyer program in the 18th century, Georg Philipp Telemann would have been a platinum member.
Restless, curious, and endlessly inventive, Telemann absorbed musical influences the way others collected stamps. While firmly rooted in the German Baroque tradition, he was famously fascinated by Polish and Eastern European folk music — rhythms he encountered firsthand and described as delightfully “barbaric” (a compliment, in his vocabulary). Their asymmetry, drive, and earthy vitality left a permanent imprint on his style.
The program places Telemann alongside anonymous pieces from the Uhrovska zbierka (1730), a remarkable Slovak manuscript preserving Central European instrumental traditions. The dances titled Hungaricus, Pulcher, or Ballet Doctoris Fausti pulse with rustic energy, surprising turns, and the kind of rhythmic snap that makes musicians sit up straighter. These were melodies shaped by migration, trade routes, and tavern floors — music that traveled light and burned bright.
Telemann’s sacred arias — Ertrage nur das Joch der Mängel, Jesu, komm in meine Seele, and Brecht meine müden Augenlider — reveal another fire altogether: inward, expressive, and deeply human. His writing balances spiritual reflection with melodic immediacy, always singing, never static.
The Concerto in e minor for recorder and flute shows Telemann at his most combustible. Fiery quick movements frame moments of lyrical calm, while folk-inspired rhythms flicker beneath the surface.
“Telemann on Fire” celebrates a composer who knew that borders are porous, that high art thrives on low dances, and that the most refined counterpoint sometimes benefits from a little village dust.
Lean in. The embers are still glowing.
We have presented Ensemble Caprice for several seasons. Each year they prepare a fantastic new program with strings, recorder and voice that tours across Canada under the artistic direction of Juno Award winner Matthias Maute. The sound of the full ensemble is spectacular in THE LOFT.
